The Turkish Coffee Starter Pack

Getting Started with Turkish Coffee

Okay, so you've discovered Turkish coffee and it seems delicious and awesome, but (like many others) you probably don't know where to start. Making Turkish coffee is a bit more of a process than simply hitting a few buttons at your office coffee machine.

This guide will give you everything that you need to get started preparing your own Turkish coffee. Once you've got everything you need, check out our post on How To Make Turkish Coffee. These two posts in tandem will have you prepared to host any intimate friends and family gathering in style.

Here's our agenda:

  • The Beans
  • The Grinder/Machine
  • The Pot
  • The Cups
  • Pods
  • The Rest

The Beans

Obvious, right? Of course you need beans to make coffee! That being said, the kind of beans is important. You will definitely need Arabica beans for Turkish coffee. Arabica beans will give you that delicious bitter caffeine flavor that is essential to your coffee experience. Don't negotiate on that.

As for the brand, you have a few options. If you're looking for an affordable starting coffee, we recommend Cezbeli. It's affordable, it's a high-quality grade, and it will get the job done.

Cezbeli is a great brand. We drink it ourselves. But if you are looking for the most authentic and flavourful experience with your Turkish coffee, we stand by Selamlique. There are simply no better flavors coming out of the middle east.

Selamlique is the absolute finest. We bring it from Istanbul, directly to your front door. It's trendy, it's tasty, and The Turkish Coffee Bazaar strongly recommends.

The Grinder

Okay so you have your beans, but what do you do now? You've got to grind them. Grinding your beans is the most important part of the Turkish Coffee process.

You are looking for a burr grinder, not a blade grinder. This is essential and will get you that nice powder that is iconic to Turkish coffee. Check out our Complete Guide to Turkish Coffee Grinding here.

You can grind the beans by hand or you can use a machine to do it for you. Ultimately, the result will be the same, it just depends on how hard you want to work and how much you want to spend.

If you're looking to save time, we do have an electric coffee grinder specific to Turkish coffee. The Beko is one of the only machines specific to making Turkish coffee.

The Pot

Serving your coffee out of a pot is about two things: Functionality and Style. You want both when it comes to Turkish coffee. The serving and hosting experience is just as fun and exciting as the drinking part.

There are of course Traditional Turkish Copper Pots. You can't go wrong with these. But there are a ton of beautiful designs in addition to the standard copper look.

If you're looking to see Turkish Coffee pots in action, check out this video below:

There are far better and more exotic options from the standard copper pot. These Cezve are some of the finest items coming from Istanbul. If you are really looking to host your guests in style, then using an authentic Cezve is the way to go.

The Cups:

Serving is, of course, important, but drinking is just as important as well. Here, you have a ton of freedom to be creative with your serving.

Most people will use small, espresso-style ceramic cups, but you can use anything you like here. Large or small, this is your chance to show off your finest sets.

Pods:

If you're not as interested in the process of making Turkish Coffee but just want to experience the signature flavors, then Coffee Pods are the way to go.

We're all familiar with the Coffee Pod method nowadays. Selamlique is great because they offer the capsule solution specifically for Turkish Coffee. If this is what you're interested in, we recommend you take a look at our Machine + Capsule Starter Pack. It is the easiest way to get into Turkish Coffee.
